Child Acolytes

What is an acolyte?

The word acolyte is taken from an ancient Greek word meaning "companion", "attendant", or "helper." At North Cross, our children acolytes take part in church services to help people worship God. Every Sunday, the acolytes light and extinguish the candles on the altar. Since ancient times, light and fire have reminded people that god is here with us. When the acolytes bring the light into the sanctuary, they are reminding people that God is with us in our worship service. When the acolytes extinguish the candles and walk out of the sanctuary with their candle lighters, they are reminding people that when we scatter out into the world, God is with us.

Children who attend worship services at North Cross may sign up to be trained as an acolyte. Schedules are posted quarterly. The main requirement is one of height. The child needs to be tall enough to light the candles and have a basic understanding of this responsibility.

Call the church office (816) 452-2939 or email the Children's Ministry team if your child would like to serve the church in this ministry.
